Introduction
Written language is the representation of a language by means of a writing system. It is different from a spoken language in many ways. One of the main differences is that written language is an invention that must be taught to people, whereas people will pick up spoken language (oral or sign) without having to be taught directly.
There are many types of writing systems throughout the world. Some are fairly recent, others can be traced back to the beginning to civilization itself. The earliest form of writing was found in the neolithic fertile crescent, and has been dated to around 4100-3800 BCE.
